From One Water Meter to Millions: What IoT Scale Really Looks Like
One of my favorite things about the IoT Innovator Awards is that the most compelling innovations aren't always the flashiest technologies. Sometimes, the most powerful IoT stories start with something incredibly simple.
A water meter.
In 2025, Vodafone and SUEZ were recognized as the IoT Innovator in Utility & Water Metering for their work bringing connected water metering and NB-IoT connectivity together to help utilities monitor consumption, detect leaks and improve water management.
And what makes this story particularly interesting to me isn't just the technology. It's the scale.
SUEZ now has more than 7 million smart water meters deployed worldwide, with more than 1,500 customers using its smart water systems and platforms. Think about that progression.
One meter can...
Connect the assets
Captures data
Delivers consumption insights/info
Detects anomalies
Identifies Leaks
Supports the customer
Triggers an action or outcome
Until what began as a relatively focused IoT use case becomes a massive digital infrastructure for an entire industry. That's what I think makes IoT so fascinating. The sensor isn't necessarily the innovation. The scale of the outcome is.
SUEZ's connected-water solutions now bring together smart meters, IoT communications, data science, software platforms and analytics. The company says users equipped with its remote-metering solutions reduce water consumption by an average of 16%. And the evolution continues.
In 2024, SUEZ and Vodafone announced a global partnership aimed at putting more than 2 million additional NB-IoT water meters into service by 2030.
More recently, SUEZ has described combining smart-meter data with network modeling and AI to identify leaks across the water system. In 2024, the company reported that this approach helped save the equivalent of 33 million cubic meters of water—about 8,900 Olympic swimming pools.
That's a very different conversation from: "We put an IoT sensor on a water meter."
The real story is: We connected an asset. We generated data. We created intelligence. We changed an operation. And then we scaled it across an industry.
That's IoT innovation. And that's exactly why I continue to love the IoT Innovator Awards.
For nearly a decade, the awards have highlighted companies and solutions that are moving IoT beyond the concept stage and into real-world deployment, measurable impact and industry transformation.
Now we're looking for the next ones.
The 9th Annual IoT Innovator Awards are OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS.
If your company, customer, technology, platform, deployment or partnership is doing something genuinely innovative with IoT, I want to see it.
Maybe it's a single connected asset. Maybe it's a factory. Maybe it's a city. Maybe it's critical infrastructure. Maybe it's agriculture, transportation, healthcare, energy, buildings, logistics, security...or an entirely new application we haven't thought about yet.
The question isn't simply: "Is it IoT?" The better question is: "What happens when this IoT solution scales?" Because the next great IoT Innovator may already be out there. It just might still be at 1,000 connected devices instead of 7 million.
