Transforming Spaces in the Heart of Chicago: Use Case Study

Following up on the press release this week, Dense Air announced the availability of the Millenium Garages Use Case study report written by Stephanie Atkinson of Compass Intelligence. The primary objectives of the Millenium Garages and Dense Air collaboration (pilot/case study) included a four-phased approach to achieve seamless cellular connectivity in the Chicago-based deep underground parking garage. 

The 4 PHASES include the following: 

1. Establish Foundational Network - The initial build was focused on laying out the foundational network using CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service: a band of radio frequency spectrum in the United States that allows users to create private mobile networks). This allowed Dense Air to build and test privately and off the public cellular network. 
   
2. Bring the Carriers – After the CBRS network was built, tested, and confirmed to be proven, we then brought in the carriers. Swift deployment of multi-carrier (AT&T and T-Mobile) small cell solutions was deployed to ensure continuous cellular coverage in the challenging environment of underground parking.  This phase has been completed for the Millennium Garage’s Level 2 north quadrant location.  
3. Test out Innovative Use Cases: Next up, and ongoing, is the Millenium team testing a range of cellular-enabled applications including electric vehicle charging, connected cameras, occupancy monitoring, vehicle identification, environmental sensors, and smart infrastructure such as lighting and ventilation.  This phase is ongoing and focuses on customer experience improvements, operational automation and smart/IoT (Internet of Things) solutions.  
   
4. Scale: Replicable Models: Identification of network gaps to build where necessary and to ensure rapid, flexible deployment while minimizing infrastructure overhead.  This is a future phase dependent on the successful testing, insights, and performance of the previous phases.
