US Small Business: Number of Employees, 2010-2015
Small Business /
Business Demographics
Government agencies around the world are slowly waking up to realize the importance of small businesses. Within the US, small businesses have found strong support and backing in the form of financial and employment incentives. Entrepreneurial activities promote establishment of small businesses and as productivity and demand increase, so does employment. Compass Intelligence estimates that the number of employees working within US Small businesses will increase from 39.8 million in 2011 to over 43.1 million by 2015. This increase represents over 2% year-on-year increase every year over the forecast period. Even though the prospects for small businesses look promising, it must be noted that many mid-sized businesses that have failed to re-establish themselves post-recession will fall back into the small business category over time.
This Excel-based Data-rich Deliverable (DRD) that is part of the Small Business subscription includes business demographics on Number of Employees for small businesses. Compass Intelligence defines Employment as non-farm, full and part-time workers in the US, hourly and salaried, including Government workers. US Small Business: Number of Firms, 2010-2015
Small Business /
Business Demographics
Post-recession, many skilled workers who were laid off or were unable to find suitable roles within large organizations moved into self-employment. This transition slowly evolved into an increase in the number of small businesses, promoted by entrepreneurial activities, which as Compass Intelligence predicts, will increase from 2.9 million in 2011 to over 3.1 million in 2015. Even though this does not represent a drastic increase in numbers, it is instrumental in creating more jobs and reducing unemployment within the US. It is expected that the number of small businesses within the US will increase consistently over the forecast period, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 2%. This increase corresponds to the number of employees working within small businesses within US, suggesting a sense of stability in this segment.
This Excel-based Data-rich Deliverable (DRD) that is part of the Small Business subscription includes business demographics on Number of Firms for small businesses.Compass Intelligence defines Firms as a business entity, which may include 1 or more locations domestically or internationally. Size of business includes Small Business (5-99 employees). The Expert Guide for this deliverable is Kneko Burney. US Small Business: Number of Firms by Vertical, 2010-2015
Small Business /
Business Demographics
Interestingly, US small businesses are poised for the strongest growth over the forecast period. The word strong is used loosely, as post-recession within the US economy is just starting to increase employment within different segments, and small businesses are expected to lead the way. During the recession period, many employees within the enterprise and mid-sized segments lost their jobs due to cost-cutting and the lack of productivity. Many of these skilled workers have since migrated to SOHO and smaller companies to utilize their skills. Such migration has supported entrepreneurship and quick startup growth, which would have otherwise been impossible in pre-recession Enterprise-led marketplace. It is expected that the number of US small business firms will increase from 2.68 million in 2011 to 2.9 million in 2015. As smaller firms expand in customer and employee base, they will slowly shift into the mid-sized domain, which is expected to be counter-balanced by innovation and inception of new, smaller firms led by skilled workers.
This Excel-based Data-rich Deliverable (DRD) that is part of the Small Business subscription includes business demographics on Number of Firms by Vertical for small businesses. Compass Intelligence defines Firms as a business entity, which may include 1 or more locations domestically or internationally. Size of business includes Small Business (5-99 employees). This Excel-based Data-rich Deliverable (DRD) that is part of the Small Business and subscription includes market intelligence on Wireline Equipment expenditures for small business by size of business. Wireline Voice Equipment includes expenditures on premise equipment required for conducting voice calls. This category includes wireline handsets (both corded and cordless), headsets, Private Branch Exchange (PBX) systems and PBX-specific handsets, key systems and multi-line phones. This category does not include PC-based PBX systems or any other kinds of LAN telephony solutions. These products are considered data networking solutions. Size of business includes SOHO (1-4 employees), Small Business (5-99 employees), Mid-Sized Business (100-999 employees), and Enterprise Business (Over 1000 employees). The Expert Guide for this deliverable is Kneko Burney. Forecasts are from 2010 through 2015 and include annual growth rate, as well as percentage of total market.
Spending on wireline services within US businesses is constantly declining, and this decrease will pick up speed during the later part of the forecast period. Wireline services have seen a marked decrease in usage and spending over the last few years, prompted by increased use of cheaper wireless alternatives that offer flexibility and mobility. Smaller businesses in particular are expected to dramatically cut down their wireline equipment spending in support of wireless services; decreasing their spending from $1.5 billion in 2011 to just over $800 million in 2015; over 50% decrease. Other factors that necessitate the decrease in wireline equipment spending include consolidation within smaller companies, and the possibility of ‘renting’ out hardware instead of purchasing it, which dramatically reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Wireless Equipment
In the current economic climate, where mobility and easier accessibility are preferred, businesses are slowly transitioning voice services towards VOIP and wireless services. As a result, investment in wireless equipment expenditure is expected to rise over the next 5 years, increasing from $8.5 billion in 2011 to over $10 billion in 2015. Smaller businesses with less than 10 employees form the mainstay of current economy, and are contributing heavily to this sector. Even though investment in this sector will increase as dollar spending, the rate of growth will slow down tremendously, attributing to a saturation point in the market which allows organizations to work with one-off systems.

US Small Business Wireline Voice Expenditures By Size of Business, 2010-2015
Small Business /
Wireline Voice
Wireline spending within US small businesses is on a dramatic decline, fuelled primarily due to increased usage of wireless communication. Other factor contributing towards decrease in investment is cheaper costs of components and general infrastructures. US small business wireline voice spending currently costs $16.1 billion, but is expected to reduce to $9.7 billion in 2015. However, its proportional share in overall US business wireline spending is expected to stay at around 48% over the next 5 years. Smaller businesses with less than 10 employees will increase their proportional spending on wireline voice services, increasing from 29.3% in 2011 to 31.1% in 2015. However, this will not compensate for general reducing in spending within this sector.
This Excel-based Data-rich Deliverable (DRD) that is part of the Small Business subscription includes market intelligence on Wireline Voice expenditures for small business by size of business. Wireline voice services include expenditures on dial tone related services, where voice calls are delivered over the public switched telephone network. Wireless Voice By Vertical
Due to cheaper infrastructures, better organization and near-saturation in organizational consumption within this sector, investment in wireless voice sector is expected to decrease substantially over the next five forecasted years. Currently equaling just over $26.5 billion, this investment is expected to decline to just over $20 billion by 2015, a substantial decrease. All sub-sectors within this spending sector including Mining, Construction, Wholesale and resale trade, services and government are expected to take a beating, reducing proportional expenditure within this sector from 43.3% in 2011 to 37.5% in 2015, also suggesting that in a few more years, wireless voice spending will not be the biggest spending unit within US business wireless services sector. Smaller businesses with over 20 employees will be the hardest hit by this decline.
This Excel-based Data-rich Deliverable (DRD) that is part of the Small Business subscription includes market intelligence on Wireless Voice Expenditures for small business by vertical. Interest and usage of wireless data will project high growth, while wireline data consistently accounts for the greatest dollar increase in spending. US Small businesses will increase their spending on wireline data from $37 billion in 2011 to $66.7 billion in 2015. Even though this is a staggering increase of more than 100%, the rate of growth is declining. Looking forward, Services is set to increase its expenditure in data wireline spending over the next 5 years, while manufacturing and mining will register a proportionate decrease based on their current spending levels.
